CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER – CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY UNIT (UNIFAC)
With an area of 3000 m2, it consists of clinical and laboratory subunits, all within NPDM-UFC. The Clinical Research Center – Clinical Pharmacology Unit and the Postgraduate Program in Pharmacology-Professional Master in Clinical Pharmacology operate in these facilities, resulting in better administration and development of research in the field of Clinical Pharmacology. The clinical part has 12 medical offices and 01 dental health office, 03 nursing stations and wards, a chemotherapy room with 20 chairs, a Clean Room, and wards (total 64 beds) exclusive for clinical trials. Equipped with a special procedures unit for Phase I studies, equipped with 04 beds with electrocardiography monitors, pulse oximeter, cardioverter/defibrillator, artificial ventilator, infusion pumps, and all necessary medication for emergency procedures. Laboratories/Services integrated into UNIFAC: Sample Preparation; Pharmacogenetics; Medicinal Chemistry; Clinical/Toxicological Analyses; Cardiovascular Research/Angiogenesis and HAI Control Committee (Hospital Infection Control Committee). Administrative wing: consists of 3 secretariats, 14 offices for researchers, data processing center. Logistics support sector: composed of warehouses, archives, pharmacy, workshop, dining area, and living area.
Over the years, UNIFAC has acquired extensive experience and capability in planning and conducting research involving Phase I, II, III, and IV clinical trials, determining the mechanism of action, coordinating multicentric studies, bioavailability/bioequivalence trials, drug interaction trials, clinical trial monitoring, elaboration, analysis, and interpretation of clinical research protocols and reports, and application of biostatistical methods in research. UNIFAC has extensive experience and tradition in conducting clinical toxicology studies and therapeutic efficacy of phytotherapeutics with several trials conducted for the pharmaceutical industry and government agencies. UNIFAC is linked to the National Network of Clinical Research Units in Teaching Hospitals, created through a program of the Ministries of Health and Science and Technology.
UNIFAC researchers provide all the necessary support for the functioning of the Professional Master in Clinical Pharmacology and the Translational Medicine Program, which also has the support of Walter Cantídio University Hospital (HUWC-UFC), Dona Libânia Sanitary Dermatology Center, São José Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Messejana Hospital, and other NPDM laboratories.
